Representatives of the CSR Committee (Elizabeth Auret and Hayley Richards) enjoyed a special morning at the Pebbles Project Open Day at the Stellenbosch branch, based at Villiera Wine Farm, on the 9th of September. The main emphasis of the Pebbles Project is education. Working with children and families in the Winelands farming communities in the Western Cape, the charity focuses on the entire life of the child and the challenging circumstances in which they live in order to make a significant and lasting difference.
At the Open Day, the Pebbles team proudly showcased their various programmes and facilities. Elizabeth and Hayley visited the ECD Centre while the little ones were fast asleep on their mattresses…it was incredibly special. The official opening of the new Skills Centre for the Early Adulthood Programme was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Pebbles have a fleet of innovative, state-of-the-art mobile resource buses sponsored by the FACET Foundation. FACET is the acronym for For Africa’s Children Every Time, based at the Delaire Graff Estate. The foundation is focused on helping farming communities that suffer from combined issues of poverty and alcohol misuse. There are mobile computer labs with qualified teachers, a mobile book library with literacy tutors who focus on basic reading skills for younger children, verbal communication, and theatrical skills with the use of hand puppets. One of the vehicles is a mobile clinic, and at the Open Day a qualified nurse offered wellness check-ups.
